Red Hot Ranagan

Red Hot Ranagan

A little over a month ago, rookie midfielder John Ranagan was busy dominating as one of John’s Hopkins’ top players, finishing fourth on the team in scoring for the Blue Jays. Now three games into his first MLL season, while his team may have changed, Ranagan’s role has remained the same.

Selected with the 17th overall pick in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft by Rochester, Ranagan has quickly become one of Rochester’s top offensive threats, and one of the league’s best rookies.

Making his MLL debut against the Ohio Machine on Sunday, June 2nd, the six foot three inch, 218-pound midfielder has become a force for the Rattlers. In his past two games against the Cannons and Machine, Ranagan has tallied six goals, and has recorded a hat trick both times. On June 7th against the Cannons, Ranagan came up with a late goal that gave the Rattlers a two goal cushion with under a minute to play, and came up late again against the Machine on June 15th to bring Rochester within two. John’s six goals ties him in 16th place for goals in the league, and his three games played is the fewest on that list.

With his combination of size and strength, it doesn’t look like Ranagan’s red-hot rookie year will be slowing down any time soon. So we decided to sit down with John and ask him a few questions about his transition to the MLL, and his hot start to his rookie year…

What is it like making the adjustment from the college ranks to the pros?

The transition from college lax to the pros is challenging and something I'm still working on.  The game is much faster and from week to week you are playing the best lacrosse players in the world. Fortunately for me the coaches and my teammates have helped make this transition much easier by offering tons of advice and support.

How have you been able to make the immediate impact that you already have?

In the couple games I have played in so far I have tried to keep it as simple as I can on the field and stick to the parts of the game that have brought me a lot of success throughout my career. I think dodging is one of my strong suits so I have just tried to draw slides and move the ball or shoot if there is no slide.

What is like playing against, or even with some of your old teammates?

When I was a freshman at Hopkins, Steven Boyle was a senior on our team and helped me a lot with the transition from high school to college. It is really cool 4 years later we are back on the same team playing together again.  This weekend down in Boca we will be playing against two of my old teammates and roommates Tucker Durkin and Mike Poppleton so it would be nice to get a win and some bragging rights against those two!

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

My goals for the rest of the season are to keep improving every game and do anything I can to help the team win as many games as we can. Also, and maybe most importantly, I will be trying to win the "Dirty Rat" award after each game.

For our last question, for any of those who have not seen the highlight of John breaking the stick in half of a Loyola defender (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrnHUpR501I) , we wanted to ask him…

What happened on that play?

Haha. I think we were man down and I was clearing the ball up the field. I wanted to give the team a little bit of energy so I gave the attackman a little stick fake to get him to jump a little and just decided to lower my shoulder and see what happens. I heard a snap and looked back and his shaft was bent. Unfortunately it didn't give the team the lift I was anticipating, we ended up losing the game, but I was really shocked to see the video all over the Internet.

John and the rest of the Rattlers look for their fourth win on the season and will travel to Boca Raton this weekend on Saturday, June 22nd at 7:00 PM to take on the Hamilton Nationals. The game will be broadcasted live on YouTube.
