How Will Koshansky Got to Where He Is Today

Will Koshansky has had a good start this season with the Rochester Rattlers at Chesapeake getting one penalty minute and two ground balls followed by his performance at Ohio with one ground ball.

Nathan Snyder, VP of Sales and Assistant GM of the Rattlers, shared his thoughts on how Will has been playing defensively.  “Will has been an excellent long stick middie that helped push the ball into transition, but also has the ability to body up a player through playing good position defense.”

The Rochester Rattlers traded their fifth round pick in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft and their sixth round 2013 MLL Supplemental Draft pick to the Boston Cannons for the rights to Koshansky.

“This is a deal that really made a lot of sense to us in terms of value.” Rochester Rattlers Head Coach Tim Soudan said at the time of the trade. “Will is a destructive force on defense who consistently causes turnovers. He was a fifth round pick by the Cannons in the 2012 MLL Draft, so when we had a chance to pick him up for a fifth round pick we jumped on it.”

Will Koshansky was named to the All-Ivy Second Team after the 2011 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse season. He ranked first on the Penn roster, first in the Ivy League and third in the nation in caused turnovers per game. Koshansky finished the season with forty-five caused turnovers. He was second on the team in ground balls with forty-seven. Koshansky started all fifteen games as a long stick middie and scored five goals and added two assists for seven points. He helped lead Penn to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Koshansky started his career with Penn as a freshmen in 2009. He played in ten games as a defensemen and finished second on the team in caused turnovers with twelve. In 2010 Koshansky split time between defense and long stick middie. He led Penn in caused turnovers with fifteen and was fourth on the team in ground balls.

In 2010, Koshansky played in all 13 games, running between defense and defensive midfield.  He led Penn with 15 caused turnovers and tied for fourth with 21 ground balls.  He scored his first collegiate goal at Yale and also had five grounders and four caused turnovers against the Bulldogs, had four GB and a CT at Dartmouth, recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers in Penn's 12-7 Ivy win over Harvard, and had two GB. He put a shot on goal against Brown, notched two grounders and a caused turnover at Lafayette.

In 2011, Koshansky was Second-team All-Ivy, played in all 15 games for the Quakers as a long-stick defensive middie, led Penn and Ivy League, finished third nationally in caused turnovers per game and was second on the team with 47 ground balls.  He had an assist and four ground balls in a victory over defending NCAA champion Duke.  He had a goal and an assist in win over Bucknell, picked up two ground balls and caused six turnovers against the Bison, had seven ground balls and caused six turnovers against Villanova, picked up four ground balls and had two CTs in OT victory over Yale.  He scored a goal, had three GBs and six CTs in Ivy OT win at Harvard, and picked up three grounders and caused two turnovers in NCAA Championship first-round loss at Notre Dame.

In 2012, Koshansky was the team tri-captain, Second-team All-Ivy, started all 13 games on defense, third on the team with 16 caused turnovers, fifth with 24 ground balls.  He scored on his only shot, against Lehigh, also had four ground balls and three caused turnovers against the Mountain Hawks, had three GB vs. Villanova, caused three turnovers against Brown, and had three grounders at Bucknell and Dartmouth.  He recorded an assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in 10-8, Mile High Classic loss to Virginia in Denver.
